How to Setup Your TSA Lock

What is a TSA Lock?

A TSA lock is a specialized security device designed to keep your luggage shut while allowing airport screeners to inspect it without damage.

Key Features:

  • Secured access: While you use a combination, US Transportation Security Administration agents hold Secured Tools that open these locks during random baggage checks.
  • Prevents Damage: If you use a standard lock, security may have to cut it off to see inside. A TSA-accepted or TSA-recognized lock can be opened and re-locked by agents, leaving your suitcase intact.

  • The Red Diamond: You can identify these locks by the small red diamond logo, which signals to staff that the lock is compatible with their tools.

In short, it’s a simple way to secure your gear while avoiding the hassle of arriving at your destination with a broken suitcase.

Is a TSA lock accepted?
  • Yes, A TSA-accepted lock is a security standard recognized by the Transportation Security Administration and airport security agencies worldwide.
  • A TSA-accepted lock is a security standard recognized by the Transportation Security Administration and airport security agencies worldwide.
  • TSA-accepted locks feature the red Travel Sentry® diamond logo, indicating they meet TSA requirements and are compatible with the TSA security solution.
  • While TSA locks are not legally required, they are strongly recommended, as they provide added security for your luggage while enabling necessary security inspections during air travel.
Where is the key for my TSA lock?

There is no key provided for your TSA lock. The keyhole you see is intended solely for TSA or security agents, allowing them to open and relock your luggage during security inspections without causing any damage.

Your lock is meant to be used with a personal combination, not a key. Just follow the instructions to set your own code. Once set, your belongings will remain secure while still permitting authorized security staff to inspect your luggage when necessary.

Follow these simple steps to set up your TSA combination lock on your American Traveller luggage:

  1. Start with the default code
Most TSA locks are preset to 0-0-0. Make sure the dials are aligned on this code before you begin.

  2. Find the reset button or lever

    • On some models, there is a small reset button on the side or bottom of the lock (often pressed with a pen or pin).

    • On others, you may need to push and hold the shackle/slider in a certain direction (e.g. toward the dials) until it clicks into the “set” position.

  3. Enter your new combination
While holding the reset button/lever in the set position, turn the dials to your preferred 3-digit code.

Choose a number you’ll remember but others can’t easily guess (avoid 000, 123, 999, etc.).

  4. Confirm and lock in your code

    • Release the reset button or move the shackle/slider back to its original position.

    • Your new combination is now saved.

  5. Test your new code
Turn the dials away from your new code, then re-enter it to make sure the lock opens and closes smoothly.

  6. Keep your code safe
Note your combination in a secure place or store it in your phone under a discreet name, so you don’t forget it before your next trip.
